CONSERVATION, RECYCLING AND AFFORDABILITY GO HAND-IN-HAND
Under my leadership, IRWD was first in California to establish a tiered rate structure to encourage conservation. Tiered rates also help to make water more affordable. We actively encourage customers to learn how conservation can reduce their rates.
IRWD now operates 121 buildings here that are largely served with recycled water – the result of an innovative project to deliver recycled water to irrigation and to indoor facilities such as cooling towers and bathrooms.
UCI relied on IRWD innovation and support to develop water chilling towers which efficiently cool the entire university.
ENSURING WATER SUPPLY WHILE PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT
The persistent drought over the past several years has made water supply issues paramount. The presence of contaminants (PFOS and PFAS) has spurred us to develop new procedures to eliminate such materials from the water supply.
At my suggestion IRWD purchased 325 acres to create the San Joaquin Marsh, an oasis unique to Southern California where children, bird watchers and others enjoy nature up close. The marsh is among the last reconstructed wetlands in our area and is part of a national pathway that birds use in their seasonal travels north and south.
The Marsh also helps us protect the ocean by capturing and diverting contaminated water from the San Diego Creek and flushing it through the Marsh to keep Newport Bay clean.
RELIABILITY OF SUPPLY
We have ample water supply!
Studies conducted by local agencies have shown that through wise development and careful planning, Orange County is secure into the future. With my enthusiastic encouragement, IRWD has developed water banks in Kern and San Diego Counties. These banks enable us to receive excess water during periods of rain and store it for use during times of drought. Ocean Desalination, which is currently more costly than other means of supply, is another opportunity for the future.
TRANSPARENCY AND COMMUNICATIONS
We communicate routinely with customers via daily and monthly reminders, through email and the Rightscape Landscape newsletter.
We welcome our customers to tour our plant[s] to see for themselves how their water is processed and to learn the value of conservation and ways to save costs on their water bills.
PROVEN LEADERSHIP AND EXPERTISE TO GUIDE FUTURE SERVICE
Here in Irvine/Tustin we are advanced in our procedures and infrastructure, but understand that we are part of a larger, complicated picture of the western water supply.
I have a deep understanding of the water industry in the City of Irvine and County of Orange and extensive knowledge of water development throughout the West, including the issues associated with water from the Colorado River, Mexico, and the lower and upper basin states.
As a practicing attorney, I am able to guide the Board’s Water Policy and Governmental Committees, with an eye first and foremost to the impact of innovation and other actions on customers and rate payers. I also contribute to IRWD’s efforts to remain current on state and federal requirements.
A COMMITMENT TO PUBLIC SERVICE IN SUPPORT OF WATER ENVIRONMENT
I am President of Shadetree Partnership, an environmental group that grows plants and trees to be distributed throughout the county.
I was a Founder of the San Juaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, and continue my board service there.
I also serve on the Boards of the Urban Water Institute and the Water Education Foundation.
My volunteer service has been recognized by the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
As a longtime resident of Irvine, I ask your support for my service to the future of our District.
